Not sure I'd touch it without a clear title...

greetings...

im with _... the owner should go to dmv and getts a title... then check to see salvage or remanufactured...

i once bought a brick on a salvage title... it was a go with dmv... butts no go with insurance... insurance companies would not insure it because there was already paid off on a total...

looks like a gryphoon special...

"ran a couple of years ago" is a ringing endorsement! Without a title it's a good candidate for a parts bike.

No drama here. It's being advertised as a parts bike and the seller has posted an honest photo of its neglected condition. The tranny or engine might be ok for another rig. He's probably ready to negotiate.

Interesting...I would take a look at it if I wasn't working on my "Music City Special".

Too bad it doesn't have a title, the bike looks fairly complete.   I think some states have mechanisms for getting a replacement title on a vehicle as old as this one.  Might bear some research if the price was right.  I would have the VIN checked to see if it was reported stolen before I paid anything for it.

I would guess the tank is in rough shape along with the tires and ABS.  Needs a Battery.  I would offer $300 in brand new Benjamins and see how bad the seller wants to get rid of it.  It probably could be made to run well again, the "MCS" had about 10 years of neglected idleness before I got it to run.  Once it fired it only took another couple hours of screwing around with it to get it running nice and smooth.  Brick engines are the cockroaches of the mechanical world, they're pretty hard to kill.

The photo looks a little more tropical than Western Pennsylvania which may be a good or bad thing.  Winter salt can be rough.  Cosmetics in the one photo posted don't really look that bad.  All in all, a fair challenge to a good mechanic/restorer.

i love my K100RS monolever. has anybody driven both the monolever and paralever, who noticed a good difference from the extra metal? i'm asking because that's what stands out whenever i look at a K1100. i know what problem BMW says the paralever solves. but i don't experience that problem. who here can speak from actual riding experience of both?

Definitely looks like it had been in a flood.  It's more likely they'll have to pay someone $50 to haul it away.

Drake (a/k/a Frankenduck) was into doing K75 paralever conversions -- bolting K1100 trans and swingarm onto a K75. I bet you could dig up some old threads here about that.

Personally, I've only ever ridden the monolever so I can't answer your question.

That is certainly a by-product of the monolever's design but I'm not certain that it was the main reason for the development of the paralever. mibh seems to have an opinion and I'm interested in his as well as yours.

shaft jacking, as well explained here: https://www.cyclechaos.com/wiki/BMW_Paralever
Anton Largiader should have been credited at that site. http://largiader.com/paralever/

Shaft-jacking is an incomplete description. BMW installed the paralever in the R80GS and R100GS cross-country competitive motos to give—as Largiader describes—more control and less bottoming-out on challenging surfaces. It worked as designed and also resulted in negligible final drive pinion shaft spline wear.

rbm has had both. Mighty Gryphon also has ridden both. Maybe they'll chime in here. Unless the moto is ridden hard, perhaps only the most discriminating of buttocks might discern the difference. I've been satisfied to have my monolever get me along mountain roads and back home happily. As Scott_ indicates, less spline wear would be a bonus but my bike's shafts are holding up fairly well at 70K miles.

have both.  can't tell any differences in street riding between the two.  the spring/damper combination is far more significant in the bike suspension performance.

I have owned numerous K bikes of both configurations. I feel  that under heavy acceleration at higher speeds, the paralever performed smoother and tighter.

TY, all. from what's been said here, i'm guessing that i'm not a technical enough rider to tell the difference, but that there is a difference, even on non-GS road bikes.

back story:

when i bought my first BMW in 1984, they had a naked R100 and a naked K100 in the san francisco show room, which had just moved from duboce street to sixth street fwiw. i knew i lacked both the knowledge and the tools to understand or repair a fuel injected motorcycle, so i got the R, which was also cheaper. in 2017 i finally decided to try the more modern version, by which mean the 1985 K100RS, and of course i loved it, and so regretted not giving it a chance sooner. thus, when offered a drive on an R1200 i jumped at the chance, and hated every minute of what they call "telelever". thus, when i saw the "paralever" i didn't know whether it would be good complexity (like fuel injection and water cooling) or bad complexity (like moving all the front end pivot points around in ways that drove me crazier). adding a second U-joint to the driveshaft seemed especially fishy (moving parts).

verdict:

i'll try to become a good enough twisty-road rider that i'll be able to tell the difference between monolever and paralever, and then give it a chance.

I was looking for a R75/5 or R80 when a friend let me ride his K75S. I liked the ride and feel of the moto so I started researching it. Once I learned about spline wear, I figured I needed to be discriminating about my shopping. When I learned it had a Jetronic, I decided to buy one. My  Subaru had one of those and had run well without a single ignition adjustment or problem in 180,000 miles. My Brick is as reliable in starting and running.

I'm not attracted to the idea of motos getting heavier or more complex. I am attracted to the idea of electric motos but they'll need a highway range of 250 miles or more, and charging time significantly reduced for me to commit to one. Progress is being made on both fronts though.
