K1100 LT OEM Exhaust - how to fit Mounting Bracket?
« on: August 04, 2019, 04:16:26 AM »
Hi guys

Traded my K75RT ... for a new-to-me 1992 K1100 LT (no cat, ABS I)  with a deafening after-market exhaust that I've now removed - trying to fit a good used OEM BMW exhaust.

How does the rear exhaust bracket fit?

I can't find any diagrams that show how it fits ... obviously goes behind the peg hanger (parallel to it) in some way, but the rubber bung on the exhaust bracket seems to push against the inside of the peg hanger so it pushes it outward.

Is it supposed to do this? The bracket only seems to go on one way, but pushes on the hanger and won't fit flush/parallel to it.

Can someone explain how this bracket fits, is it supposed to be in line with the peg hanger?

Here's some pics of the bracket and hanger side by side, the view from above shows the problem, the rubber mounting on the bracket pushes on the inner wall of the peg hanger.

Cheers

Steve

NB - ignore the last pic above, those are the Left and Right brackets side-by-side IIRC .... but all the other pics show the Left Bracket and Left Footpeg Hanger (the side in question) ie the exhaust side.

Anyone?  Even a pic of the footrest bracket and the exhaust hanger as fitted?

Somebody must know ... removing the exhaust is part of transmission work ....

I'm struggling with this one folks ... :dk

I can look at mine, but they are ABS2 bikes so the bracketing might be a bit different.....

From memory I think you might have the rubber bung on the wrong side. I think it should be on the inside pressing against the exhaust not on the outside pressing against the foot peg bracket.

Here's what mine looks like. The outer footpeg plate has a rounded place for the placement of the round rubber bushing of the inner bracket. I don't see this on your outer pegplate.

ahhh ... that's a different footrest bracket, mine has the erler (K100?) type

... or maybe the p.o. fitted K100 footrests for some reason (accident - hope not).

Anyway, it sure doesn't go with that exhaust bracket.

Did the early K1100 have a different footrest bracket, more like the K100?

greetings...

some k75s k100s k1100 use different footrest brackets...

to know for sure you gotta put your vin in here... find the oe part number... use the etk to see what motos it fitts... anything less will be an expensive education as you donts knows what you had and you dont knows what you got... assume nothing... intel is powerful...

furthermore... poast up photos of your entire moto so we can see whats you gotts there...

example... tommt wants a 62112305252...use this method and you know everything about what fitts what...

this is what the etk says... wont fit every k75 k100 and no k1100...

that real oem site shows a different footrest plate/bracket than the one I have on my bike.  Website shows P/N 46712311507 "Plate left black rib unpainted" for my VIN.

Thanks again guys, fantastic help as ever!  Johnny I checked out the Max BMW fiche and now see what the problem likely is - K100 footpeg hanger meets K1100 exhaust bracket!

I'll post pics of what I have, see if my theory is on the $

Here's the set up on the bike as it is currently (and this is how it was sold to me).

Anyone ever seen this style of footrest bracket on a K1100?

I don't think that's the problem. Your moto is an 4v(16V) early K1100 model and the K100RS and K1 are 4V (16V) precursors to yours. All early models can share exhausts, hangers and foot peg plates although the K1 is a special case. The one you have is black rib. The ribs are the three parallel bars in the plate casting between the top screw of the foot peg plate and the offset bend in the center of the plate. See attached photo.

Your foot peg plates are the earliest type for K1100 and your moto is the earliest K1100. Yours has a lot in common with Filmcamera's K100RS. Maybe he can share some photos of his setup. You might be able to make this work yet.

This plate is not shown in a fiche diagram but is nonetheless a valid part and can be seen on many 1992 K1100LT photos on the Web and at several vendors using the BMW code sticker.  Occasionally a diagram on a fiche will not exactly represent the part if there have been several different styles.

Here's a link with a photo of a 1992 K1100 with the same plates. They can be found on both ABS and non-ABS motos.

Thanks again guys, great info!

Laitch this is really interesting ... as Poirot says this is where the plot, em, thickens.

My bike has the "BMW 4 Valve" metal spark plug cover plate ... maybe somebody put that on as a cunning style mod (aka a fake)?  An 8v dressed as a 16v ... maybe the p.o. was a social climber.

In any case, other than removing the valve/timing cover, is there a simple way to tell if it's a 16v or an 8v K1100?

The thickness isn't in the plot. You've been led astray by my error—which has now been corrected and by its longevity indicated few are reading this, or care enough to point out errors  :laughing1: —and now you're coming back to the fold. You should download the K1100 Workshop manual from here to inform yourself.

The engines of classic K motos are described in two differing ways. 2V indicates two valves per cylinder for a total of 8 valves per engine, making it an 8V engine. 4V indicates four valves per cylinder for a total of 16 valves per engine, making it a 16V engine hence your spark plug cover 4V identification.

BMW tends to use 2V and 4V in their publication titles.

Here are some identifiers—for fun.

Extended throttle body manifolds. Sometimes they are insulation covered.

The earliest have an ignition amplifier in front of the battery cover

All 4V (16V) have a Motronic control unit instead of a Jetronic fuel injection control unit.

It's time to return to the foot peg plate/exhaust hanger conundrum.

There never were any 8v 1100's....
K75's and K100's were (2v per cyl) variations up until the model k1004v(4v per cyl, or "16v"). The 1100's started life as a "16v" production motor.
During the 1st model year or so of the 1100 they utilized some of the technology of the predecessor k1004v, ignition system, abs, etc...  Starting in model year '94 the 1100 series had changes. BMW dropped the ignition amplifier, changed from ABS1 to ABS2, fuel control changed from Jetronic to Motronic, and a few other small changes.

No worries, I was Googling trying to find an example of an 8-valve (branded as "2v") K1100!

OK, so I have an early 16-valve K1100 LT ... looks like BMW used the footrest brackets from the K100 RS production line on the early K1100. Probably the 100 RS housing too, as the bolt pattern has to match the footrest bracket? All my own guesswork though.

Now I know I have the correct footrest bracket, I've mounted the chrome circular moveable stay (from the inner bracket) using a spacer and all looks secure.

Thinking now about that police bike idea with the large jubilee/worm drive clamp, to lessen chances of cracking at welded section near the collector.

Do it. It's almost the least ambitious modification that can be done; that should make it attractive.

thanks Scott,

I see that K has a protective panel/cover over the ignition coils.

Was that an accessory?  I'm surprised to see K1100 models with the coils so exposed.

sorry - a bit off-topic on this thread
