ABS II. K1100RS.
« on: July 28, 2019, 01:58:51 AM »
SO i am still fixing my k11 that was sitting for 17 years.  Time for the ABS.
Both lights flashing alternately.  Reset the ABS by grounding the pin from the diagnostic connector.
It worked.
Closed the main switch , Open it again  an both lights were flashing at the same time.  Road the bike above 5 mph . Both lights turned off. GREAT.
Tested the  ABS by braking the rear wheel . And it worked.  About 3 braking per second.
SO FAR SO GOOD.  I was happy
Rode it for 20 mins. 2 lights flashing alternately . No more ABS.
Reset ABS again. It would not reset.
Reset ABS again . 2 lights OFF.   after a while this time i have 2 lights on all the time.
I kept resetting the ABS unit. And i would have this kind of results.  Until i gave up. Thinking i would do an error analysis with  LED lamp.
This morning i turn on the bike  and....... Lights off  I have ABS working again without resetting. How did that happen?  I rode 150 miles with no problems . I stopped to refuel . Started the bike again  and the flashing lights are back
MY biggest concern is the erratic behavior of the lights  and that sometimes they are ON all the time.  I haven't found any information about that.
Thanks in advance for your comments .

A weak battery will cause repeated intermittent failure warnings. Regardless of whether it is new or not, what is the battery's resting voltage?

+1 for suspecting the battery.
The ABS systems are sensitive to a week battery when cranking the bike.

I've read about the low voltage problems on ABS ii.  The thing is that i crank up the bike and sometimes the ABS works perfectly no errors. In the middle of the ride they start to flash alternatively or both on .
I will still try a new battery just in case.

The battery voltage at rest is 12.8 v.

Dear Laitch and Scott_  Thank you for your responses . You were right it was a low voltage issue when  you crank the bike.   Now i have ABS  all the time with no issues.  I didn't replace my battery for a new one , but include a super capacitors bank . Something i had planned before. It works beautifully. So i am sharing with you this.
As you can see The battery + the capacitors keep  collage above 12.8 dropping to 12.0 at cranking just for less than a second. Capacitors deliver all their voltage at once and they recover it very fast.
My next fix will be to change the lead acid battery for a lithium battery ( plus capacitors) .
I will safe 13 or 15 pounds.
Thanks so much for replying

Please go into more detail. I'm certain others would like to try this solution. Keep us updated on how it works in the long run, too.

given the fact the bikes came from the factory with functioning ABS that worked with a lead acid battery with no problems, the capacitor addition is a crutch that is hiding the real problem.  capacitors should NOT be needed for a functioning ABS.  ABS works just fine on the K1100RS in my garage with no capacitors.   that fact that is is working in this case shows there is still a bad battery, or more likely one or many dirty connections in the system that are causing a large voltage drop.

problem not solved....keep digging for why the voltage drop is there.  when found, delete the extra capacitor thing....

The super capacitors are the Maxwell BCAP0350E270T13.  They are 2.7V 350F.  That means if you use 6 of them  you will have a maximum capacity of  16.2 V.  But will only get the output capacity of your alternator.  In my case 14 volts.

I bought  a little board  from eBay. Very straight forward instructions. There are better ones out there that will prolong the life of the capacitors.  But i just wanted to test them . Besides this ones can be recharge 1 million times.

You can also find this pack already welded.  ( i don't know that seller)

mlytle   I bought this bike recently. It has been stored for 17 years.  I just put an used battery that of course might have some issues . In my list to buy i wanted a new Lithium battery but  i could not  find the right one because of the tight space of the k11rs.
I then tried to make it run on the capacitors alone but it is not practical since they can not hold that much charge.  So i instal temporary my used battery with the capacitors.

In the future i am going to use a Hybrid system of lithium batteries and ultra capacitors.  I would safe lots of weight and the life expectancy  of the packs  might be many years.

Hello Everybody.  Update.
I hadn't  had a problem with my ABS  after new battery and capacitors.   Until it rained.
I have the flashing lights again and it  could not be reset for 2 days.   I guess until something got dried.
The ABS was reset  and it was working perfectly until .....It rained again.

Had any of you had this problem?  I am thinking about a open cable at the sensors
