Certificate of Conformity - HELP!
« on: March 21, 2019, 05:17:27 AM »
Dear fellow Motobrickers,

Some of you may know that in London, UK, they have introduced a ULEZ - Ultra low emissions zone.

This means older bikes (I have a 1985 K100) now have to pay £12.50 to go in to the centre of London - This scheme is also being rolled out further 2012.

Turns out there is a loop hole for some bikes - If you have a low NOx (g/km or g/kWh) emissions date recorded on your V5 (Logbook / doc of ownership)

Naturally older bike do not have this recorded - In the old days no-one cared.

This level can be found on the BMW COC (Certificate of Conformity)

Does anyone wither know what this NOx level is? OR have a COC for a K100 of any variety? As presume all are similar.

Many thanks All

David

You'll probably need to have your moto's emissions analyzed by somebody certified for that purpose and pay them for the service. Establish with the Ministry if that will be acceptable. Compare the price of testing with the cost of the ULRZ fee. I've found nothing in old records indicating N2O testing was recorded for these motos.

Hi Laitch
Yes I'm sure you're right.
However TFL (Transport of London) have stated that they require manufacturers COC.
So looking like need to speak to BMW UK.
Will research as to whether TFL will accept a new test certificate.
MAny thanks

If this is going to be something new, I'd be willing to bet that BMW will have to start measuring and creating a COC certificate for all new bikes/cars, etc.... in the future.
Kind of like when they had to make a "U.S." California emissions variant of the bikes with the cat converter and O2 sensor, that wasn't required anywhere else.

Makes me wonder if the dealers there will start offering the certificate with a "tune up" that would be valid for x number of years and then a re-test for those bike that could be certified.
It also wouldn't surprise me if the older bikes would not pass the test anyway without major modification, like adding a cat converter system/setup new fi controller, etc... That would definately be cost prohibitive.

Like Laitch mentioned it may be cheaper just to pay the tax, depending on how often you have to pay it --- per year I'm guessing.

I'm surprised that the older bikes are not automatically grandfathered in..... like they are here in the states.

Hi Scott
RE: Grandfathered

They are.
Any vehicle over 40 years old is MOT, tax & emissions exempted.

I have to wait 7 years for the K to be clear.
I've got a bunch of older bikes.  Just preparing a 1976 Kawa Z1000 A1 for the job.
So maybe will mothball the K till 2025 - If I'm still in the riding bikes business by then!

No COCs issued by BMW before 2003. If you find out differently, please post to this thread the process for obtaining one.

Clicking the mop might be the only way.
