New K75S rider in southeast Pa.

Hi, just posting to introduce myself. John, from the Bucks County area. My riding history is about 45 years of street, and touring rides. This forum looks like a an excellent community.


 I am also very happy that I just bought a 94 Dakar yellow K 75 S. Nice condition, with meticulous service records from around 1997 to 2012. I am the 3rd owner. I have not ridden it much, since I just got it Saturday, and we have had wet weather.

  Thanks, I think I just fell into this bike. It was parked at Hermy's BMW last October, and the owner introduced himself while I was ogling his machine. I learned that he was considering trading it in, on an RT. I offerred to buy it, and a deal was struck. He stored it over the winter, and I rode it home last Saturday.
   Although it had very good service up until 2012, I think I need to go through the fuel system, to ensure that everything is " good" I noticed a strong " whoosh" when I opened the gas cap, which I believe may be caused by inadequate tank venting.

If it was ridden regularly, it shouldn’t be too bad.    Everyone says they don’t like sitting, but while that seems the case with most mechanical objects, it truly does appear to be especially true with these. 

I’d still replace everything rubber or rubber-like that you don’t know the history of.    Mine (1992) was low mileage with little wear and tear, but I’m convinced I averted a couple of disasters by changing lines, tubes, and hoses.   That stuff fails mysteriously anyway, and neither age nor sunlight is a friend to it.

I noticed a strong " whoosh" when I opened the gas cap, which I believe may be caused by inadequate tank venting.
Many fuel tanks whoosh when their caps are opened if they're low on fuel. The fuel vent and fuel cap water drain ports exit from the rear right underside of the tank. They either empty into a frame-mounted cup or are attached to hoses that empty behind the right foot peg plate.

It noticed that my 94 Dakar Yellow K75S has somewhat unique BMW logos applied to t he tank? A little different that the ones on my previous BMW bikes and cars. Should be visible in these pics. Are these correct for my 94?

BMW created many variations of its roundel. That's one of them. It has been pegged by BMW moto-specialist and aficionado Bob Fleischer (Snowbum) as being from the '70s and '80s. A dealer or previous owner might have removed the original and replaced it with that. They're still available for purchase. Usually those tanks sport the standard roundel.

From a distance it looks like a bloodshot eye—imposing and unsettling, a nice touch.

I recently, March of 2019, bought a 1994 K 75S. At this point, I've been able to ride it over 2000 miles, between endless rainstorms here in the north east. Here are some initial observations and comments.

I am really enjoying the light, nimbleness of this bike. The original owner installed progressive springs, and a upgraded rear shock. Not sure how bad the OEM suspension was, but the aftermarket components work fine.
Smoothness of the engine is uncanny, as most of you already know. I've never had a machine that is this vibrationless. Only downside is when I get back on my shakin' 850 Moto Guzzi Le Mans.:)

The K75S does not create as much rider heat, as I had expected. I had been under the impression that k bikes were hot to ride in warm weather.

Gas mileage seems to be unexpectedly great. After several fill up, my gas mileage is coming in at a low of 50, to a high of 53 mpg. This is in all types of riding, plus some 75mph + sprints. Been using mostly premium fuel.

Tires are a sore spot, as the bike came with 4 year old metzeler non radials. They are OK, but I prefer to run Radial tires. can I use radials on a 94, with the three spoke wheels? Any specific tire  recommendations ?

Overall, I am very impressed  with this machine, and frankly, very surprised that the K75 was not a huge sales success for BMW.

my rondels are flaking so I bought some nice ones on fleabay for much cheaper than what the mothership sells them for. haven't gotten around to installing them yet.
