Mid-Atlantic Meet Up
« on: March 11, 2019, 08:33:13 PM »
There are a few of us along the mid-atlantic coast riding K-bikes.  We need to do a lunch run meet-up.

Any suggestions?  Judging by the member's postings I'm thinking a northern VA or MA location.

Main St Pub in Clifton, Va is popular with the Motorcycle set around here.  Metro area BMW MC club meets there on fourth sunday morning of the month.

I'm on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, so I'd be up for anything between here and Richmond.

Great idea! I was just looking up some rides from Morton's and MOA coming up. The Southern Maryland area is really nice rural riding, and there's BBQ at George's or a nice ride to Cobb Island for Capt. John's. Eastern Shore where Hobo is, has impressive routes on bicycle, so they've gotta be great at MC speeds, around Church Creek comes to mind.

My place is in Waldorf, and can be a crashsite too. Bring a swimsuit.

Main St. Pub in Clifton sounds like a nice ride north on US 17 for me, just over three hours avoiding I95.

The weather is rapidly improving and April is just around the corner.

Does it need to be a Saturday or Sunday for the non-retired folks?

I'm pretty much available anytime, although traffic would be a bit less hairy on Sat/Sun.
I still haven't gotten over going through DC to G'town at 0800 on a weekday...combat ride for sure! ;)

I'd love to do Chincoteague Island -- that's almost 2.5 hrs one-way for me and would entail me not having to cross the Bay Bridge to the Dark Side which I try to avoid. But it's a haul for y'all, probably more than a day ride. But hell, if you want to go to Chincoteague for whatever reason, now's the time before the summer heat and crowds.

But if that won't work, I guess I could do Cobb Island or Indian Head but the 301 route brings me through the frontier territory of the DC Wasteland -- not much fun at all. If it were up to me, we'd stay away from the Potomac and head East to the Patuxent or maybe as far as the bay. natalena, you're from that area, do you know anything that is straight due east of Dahlgren VA? Dahlgren is only 2 hrs from Yorktown. Solomon Island would be a good destination geographically but I've never been there and it's possible all the places there cater to the yachting set -- not exactly the desired ambience for moto people. There's Trader's Steak House in Chesapeake Beach that has a big deck and is frequented by two-wheelers of the 'biker' persuasion. I was there once and had the feeling everyone was afraid they were going to get beemer juice on them.

Anything on the Eastern Shore is going to be a haul across the CBBT for stokester and the Bay Bridge for natalena and myltle. I love riding over here because you can ride for miles without seeing a car. . On the other hand, it's flat as a pancake so if you're into hills and twisties, best to stay west of the bay.

Johnny gets anywhere a half hour from wherever his so he doesn't care where  we go.

you guys committed to coastal area? How about heading west? Harpers Ferry, Winchester, Sperryville, the spine of the Shenandoah Mts.
Area is easily accessible via super-slab, once there the rural roads are lovely.

I haven't seen a mountain since I moved here from Seattle in 2005 so I'd love to do that some time soon but that's a serious haul from Yorktown for stokester for a day ride.

Didn't know you're in, kaopano.

BTW I'm not riding that kind of distance anywhere near the Beltway on a weekday...

Sounds like the makings of multiple outings! Koapono is totally on with Sperryville (good eats there) and the Skyline. I grew-up as a Chinese Redneck in Afton/Waynesboro, and haven't been back there in 40+ years, but still remember blowing huge blue smoke trails from the RD's and 500 triples along the twisties of the Parkway.

Heading towards the DC area from Annapolis, there's the "5" that is a much nicer ride than 301, and goes through Davidsonville. You can cruise all the way to National Harbor without too much highway time.

The way I look at it the good riding roads are up to me on the way to lunch and back.

Finding a good place for lunch that is a few hours ride for many of us is the issue.

I'm open to anything within a few ~3 hours ride from here.

It's three hours from here to Sperryville, and right in the middle between those two points is the DC/Baltimore/Alexandria metro area and the only way to get past it is 110 miles of slab via 50 and the Beltway. There aren't any backroads off the Eastern Shore from here - just slab all the way to the Bay Bridge - and no detours around the Beltway that wouldn't end up taking 4 hours or more to get there. So, I can't commit to that one this time. Maybe when I have more time and can spend a couple nights so I have a whole day to ride the twisties...but I don't wanna ride all day just to get to the twisties and then have to turn around and come back without riding any!

Heading towards the DC area from Annapolis, there's the "5" that is a much nicer ride than 301, and goes through Davidsonville. You can cruise all the way to National Harbor without too much highway time.

I didn't see any '5' on the map thru Davidsonville, just 214 which ends up in downtown DC. Ugh... no thanks!

IMO the best destination for a lunch meet-up is one that's geographically centered between Alexandria, Yorktown and Chestertown so noone has to traverse metro DC. Southern Maryland fits that bill, AFAIC. So my choice would be Captain John's or Scuttlebutts on Cobb Island. Looks like that's 2.5 hrs or less for everyone and has a nice deck on the water. Can't knock that!

BTW what, did you get a five minute break from the rain out there Johnny, enough to make it to the Indiana line?

I'll pre-run the backroads to Cobb Island, as there's a couple bicycle routes that go there on nice roadway.

Stokester, I'll have to look it up, but there's a road that connects the 301 (just on the VA side of the bridge) with Fredricksburg and pops out by Mary Washington Univ., that is a total hoot to ride or drive.

Motorhobo, apologies, I was thinking of 301 to 50 segment. Drove up to Annapolis, and it was pleasant.

I'm kinda/sorta/almost in! Also lost sight that this was a luncheon ride and not a rally.
Depends on date, I've a grand-daughter due and a trip to west coast planned.
Anything 3 hours or so from richmond works for me, via 301 or 17.
I don't do the DC/Balti/metro-loops in a car let alone a scoot.
I'll lurk then commit once destination/date has been made.

Johnny - you know better than to drink and do a 2500 mile ride! Looks super good though -- maybe I'll get me some and do a 3 hour Netflix ride on the nearest sofa.

I'll stick my neck out and say how about Saturday Apr 14, rain date Sun Apr 15 either at Captain John's or Scuttlebutts on Cobb Island. I don't know either, but both have a deck. Scuttlebutts looks more 'biker' friendly, but I personally don't know any 'bikers'... I don't know how friendly they are towards 'motorcyclists'.

Motorhobo, I'm on board for April 14th or 15th. It could be a "Tax Day" run. Capt. John's has the small veranda, and sometimes seating upstairs ... I haven't been to Scuttlebutt's yet.
How about the rest of the Brickster's?

mlytle is right -- that should be Sat Apr 13, rain date Sun Apr 14 unless everyone just wants to bank on the 14th and cancel if bad weather. If it's raining on that Saturday, I won't be riding a 5 hour round trip, I promise you that.

Johnny....what you up to here in virginia?  I will be NE of Winchester at Summit Point Motorsports Park all this weekend teaching car racing.

Too late, Johnny is probably not on the East Coast any more. You might not be aware, but his K-bikes go 5000 mph, enabling him to be anywhere in the continental US within a half hour. If noone is there when he arrives, he gets bored and just goes back home.

Sorry we missed you Johnny -- must've blinked.

So we are on then for Sun Apr 14 and reschedule manually if lousy weather?

I'd say considering April showers there's maybe than a 50/50 chance the weather will allow...

April 14th (Sunday) is good with me. It's Palm Sunday for whatever that's worth, and the Chinese Formula One GP is that day too, but I'll make an exception to being glued to the TV. CRAB SEASON started April 1st!

If anyone wants to rally ride to Cobb Island, my place is along the way, just off the 210 Indian Head Hwy and the 228 (Berry Road). PM, and I'll send an address. Cheers!
