Hi from Bend, Oregon
« on: January 12, 2019, 07:07:42 PM »
Hi folks, just arrived here, I'll tell you why. I already have 3 excellent motorcycles, just moved to Bend, then a friend visited for the holidays (a guy I've ridden thousands of bicycle miles with). I have 2 high end road bicycles and as we walked by them in my garage, my friend says, "gawd, I love that Pinnerello!" I sarcastically replied, "I'll trade you straight across for something but it better be good!" Eric stated, "I'll trade you straight across for my BMW motorcycle". Like I said, I have another high end bike (Cannondale) so, Holy Smokes, we did a deal, sight unseen for me. It is a very unused 1990 BMW K75RT, anltilock, new Dunlops, with 24k miles! It is a diamond in the rough (my favorite type of scooter to acquire so I can bring it back to beautiful, it's begging for it!). It's just been sitting, covered, for years in his garage! Now.......he went to Mexico for a 10 day vacation so I can't SEE or pick up the scooter till Jan 21st! I made him send me this one pic before he flew away so this is all I have to stare at! Kinda funny because I'm currently building a Honda Cafe Racer but this BMW has really diverted my emotions! So, glad to be here, more pics later before, during and after the restoration.......

Great story, I've gotten back into biking the last couple years, though more gravel and mountain.  The K looks to be relatively un-molested, good luck bringing it back.

Congrats on the brick, it's the SLX Eddy Merckx of the m/c realm, super durable and what a ride!
If you run into another roadie from San Diego riding a B.Holland Ti, he's a buddy who retired to Bend.
There's a pic in the forum of the rack I built for the K, works very nice.

Thanks for the support you all! I can't stand that my "new" Bimmer is 6 hours away and I've never even straddled the thing. Hey I have a random question (and it is NOT representative of my intentions, just curious) Is it a major project to make an RT into an S? (removal of all the touring equipment and fairing). Thanks again and more later.

Welcome!  That looks like a nice bike.  It won't take much to make it a sweet horizon chaser.

Shouldn't be too hard to change over to an S model.  BMW designed the K bike line to have a lot of interchangeable/common parts.  A changeover isn't a bad idea.  The RT is about as good as it gets for rolling coast to coast, but can be a bit clumsy and top heavy for daily riding in traffic.  The S is a lot lighter and more fun to ride on a daily basis.  I say this as the owner of both, and my RT only leaves the garage  2-3 times a year when I'm heading out to cover a couple thousand miles and a few states.

That's great to know Gryphon! The reason I ask is, I already have a capable long distance bike (KTM 1290 Super Adventure) with all the distance parts (electronic cruise, heated seats, 7 1/2 gal tank, giant cargo capacity, etc.). Also, the k75 just looks beautiful to me with just motor and chassis! I don't know, plenty to do in bringing her back, I'll cross that bridge later when I know my deeper feelings about it. Meanwhile, I look forward to learning and wrenching on this special scooter. Also, I'm really happy that I found you guys!

Is it a major project to make an RT into an S?
I'm pretty sure the tanks are different and the S fairing won't wrap around the 22 liter tank.

That's probably true, which would still allow me to take off all the fairings, find an aftermarket 1/4 or 1/2 fairing, color match it and go with it!

That's probably true, . . .
The radiators differ. The RT's is two inches wider and has 60ml greater capacity—data compliments of gone_ape's shade tree study. According to the MAX BMW parts fiche, the K75S and K75RT fuel tanks are the same. None of this matters because Raydog was just looking to have his curiosity tended. He's going to make his moto tremendous in a different way.

Well, I just reserved my uhaul ramp trailer. Monday morning I'll do the 6 1/2 hr drive from Bend to Reno, go to Reno uhaul and pick up trailer, then go to my friends house (where my K75 RT awaits!) . After loading, I'll bring this beauty back to Oregon where I can park it in my garage and start in detailing and examining this scooter, including lubing and inspecting the spline. After owning over 40 motorcycles, you'd think this would be routine by now....but not this time. My friends and I are already talking about a 2-3 week ride to Canada and Alaska this June! SO, pics and addl info to follow...
