Saw this on another forum as well.

No surprise here, Fram filters have been crap for years now.

I would like to see him do it with the OEMs; Motorcraft, AC Delco and Toyota come to mind.

In OZ you used to be able to get two different brands of Toyota filters. The commercial  Toyota's filters were vastly superior to the car ones which were locally manufactured. Unfortunately the commercial filters were not available for all the cars.

I used the Toyota filters in my 4Runner, that is before a texting high school kid going to school hit it at speed totaling it out.  The Toyota ones always came with a crush washer.

We cut a couple apart to see how they differed. The commercial (Grey)ones were so much better in every way. Thicker base and body, better valve, thicker material and more of it. I believe the car ones (White) were possibly RYCO which I won't use on any of my vehicles. I only ever use Mahle or Mann on my Brick. The supply of  after market Mahle dried up in OZ so I have been using Mann. However as I am going to get some parts from Motobins I am going to order some Mahle ones.  Multiple orders offsets the freight costs a bit it actually should work out a little cheaper than the Mann ones.

After watching the video, I decided to see how the Carquest 85348 filter stacked up.  Turns out they are made by Wix, same as the Napa Gold.  Gives me a little more peace of mind.

A couple side notes: If you do use the Carquest filter(which is widely available and a few cents cheaper than the Wix) with synthetic, go for the more expensive of the two they carry.  The element is supposed to be specific for use with the longer oil change intervals that come with synthetic oil.

Back in the '80's I was a member of a Fluid Power Industry group.  Back then, servo hydraulics were the big thing for stuff like robots.  Servo valves were having lots of contamination problems, and the industry sponsored an engineering study of filter performance.  Literally hundreds of filters from almost every manufacturer were tested for efficiency and reliability.  The conclusion that I remember was that Fram was far and away the worst filter you could buy.  Because the Fram element shed fibers into the oil flowing through it, it was actually worse than no filter at all.

I've always been a fan of Wix and the filters made by them until bought one for my daughter's Saturn Ion and found it was made in China.  I suspect the metal spin-on are USA but haven't verified it as I use Motorcraft on my truck.

My bricks get Bosch from BeemerBoneyard.

in Fram's defense, they have that nifty grippy surface and are bright orange so you can find them in funky unfamiliar engine compartments.

I recently went to NAPA to pick up a Mann filter for my car and the clerk repeatedly stated that WIX made the Mann filter, like I should buy that brand instead, but the Mann was on sale.

Here is one of many comparisons: http://www.austincc.edu/wkibbe/oilfilterstudy.htm that states that there are only 5 manufacturers of all the different brands.

My moto gets HiFlo 163 filters—made in Thailand, $10—$13, free shipping. I haven't seen one of those dissected yet. I'll put that project on my bucket list.

Here is one of many comparisons: http://www.austincc.edu/wkibbe/oilfilterstudy.htm that states that there are only 5 manufacturers of all the different brands.

There is truth in this statement, although one might argue whether the real number is greater or less than 5. However, the manufacturer builds the filter to the specs provided by the marketing company, so just because a filter is built by X, doesn't mean it has the same component quality as the filter provided under the X brand.
