Questions on this LT
« on: December 09, 2018, 06:54:07 PM »
I sold my 85 K100RT over the summer as I wanted a newer R1200RT. Flew to Oregon and picked up a sub-10K miles 2008 model and rode it back to the midwest (in a hurry, only had 4 days to burn). Great bike and I've nearly doubled the mileage on it since I picked it up, plan on many more.

But. I still get distracted by K's and find myself perusing through the ads...it's a sickness that I need to cure or embrace I guess. They're just darned interesting bikes to me and I can't look away for long.

Anyway, I've found a few used ones floating around, including an $800 one that needs water pump repair and maybe (probably) more. The one that follows in the pic has me the most curious though, I've never seen one with a color matched seat and wondered if anyone could shed some light on whether that's a factory unit or not. The bike is advertised as a 1-owner, purchased in 88 and looks well kept.

With 114,000 miles, it might be ready for at new clutch, too but the improved windscreen, rear shock and front springs are a plus. At the $1500 asking price, it's good to know that it has been ridden instead of kept in storage.

I spoke with him earlier, it has been in long term storage since 2005. I asked about the TLC that he mentioned it needed, his response was it needed washed and waxed. Has had all required maintenance performed throughout its life, including splines. Speedo replaced under warranty at 18k miles, replacement still works.

Iím 5 hours away but might be willing to make the trip after finals are over this week. No rest until I get those collected and graded.

Iíve got an 85 RT spotted as well, with 34k miles on it they say. The owner doesnít know much about the bike though, no records at all.

At $1500 there should be enough in your budget to ship that sweet RT from Cali to Illinois.  On the other hand, if the seller can document the service and the fact it's a daily rider I would take a chance on a fly and ride.

Be aware that shipping can be cheaper than a fly and ride when you figure airfare and three/four days of meals, gas and lodging.

In that case, hire a helicopter.

In that case, get AAA RV+ and go get it.  If it can't do the whole trip, you have 200 miles of free towing to get it home.
