butt comfort

My 85 krt100 seat is great.  Its attractively designed, tough as nails, easy to open and remove.  Only problem is its like sitting on an 8 inch pine board with a skimpy amount of padding.  Of all the motorcycle seats I have sat on except for the tiny bikes, this has got to be the most uncomfortable.  1-1 1/2 hour ride and I have to stop, not because of fatigue but a big pain in my ass!  I have bikes i ride as small as 350 cc and their seats are way more comfortable.  Anybody have any luck aftermarket cushions or should I chuck the the whole seat?

My recently acquired K75 has a Corbin aftermarket seat that is super comfy! eBay is loaded with them

seats are a personal fit thing.  i have two differnt corbins.  neither one is comfortable.  i have a pretty fresh stock seat on my K75.  it is fricking awesome.  ride all day comfort.  (i may be the ergo model for bmw K'S bikes.  stocks seats, pegs and bars fit me perfectly on K75S, K1100RS and K1300S)

your stock seat may be worn out, or it is just not the right contour for you.  gotta try different things.

I have four seats for three bikes. 

My K75S has a Corbin, recovered by Sargent.  It is brutally uncomfortable for rides longer than an hour, but seems to be softening up a tiny bit after about 8,000 miles.  On the other hand, it's a really nice looking seat and makes the bike look really nice.

My K75RT has a Russell Day Long seat.  I chase horizons with that bike and that seat is good for 12-14 hour long days in the saddle.  It's huge and probably wouldn't look good on a sportier ride.

My K100 RS has a BMW Comfort seat.  It is at least as comfortable as the Russell, but not as large.  I use that bike for commuting and day rides, the seat is perfect for that.  There are a fair number of them available on eBay for prices between $100 and $200+.  IMO it is a good choice between comfort and sportiness.

I also have the stock "plank" that came with my K100RS.  I have it for when I sell any of my bikes so I can keep the seat I have on them right now.

I have a Corbin Canyon dual sport and like it, though Corbin seems to get dissed by some folks.  Couple of my friends like those bead things.  Every butts different.  If you go shopping keep in mind the '85 seat is specific to the 84 & 85 K100's, seats for later years will not fit.

I have Corbins on both my K100RS and my R100GS, and I like them. As others have said, it's a really personal thing. Recommendations aren't all that useful, as one rider loves what another probably hates...

I am a fan of sheepskin seat covers, they add comfort to any seat and can easily be moved from bike to bike or made permanent. I have installed snaps on mine which keeps cover in place but allows for easy removal.
I also own an Airhawk seat cushion, well constructed pneumatic "pillow", available in several sizes and easy to adjust by adding/removing air.
these are definitely the "cheap seats" for minimal price you can add comfort which negates discussion with spouse regarding cost of new seat in lieu of car payment.

Try a Honda NC700x seat. slope slides you into the tank [frunk] and mashes your jewels. couple mods I did was to elevate the front and cover the seat with sit and fly, available on fleabay cheap from China. helped a whole bunch. On my brick I bought a used Corbin, which fits my tiny butt fine.

The plank was probably intended by the brain trust at BMW headquarters to keep the base price low and encourage the buyers to upgrade to the "Comfort" seat.  Compared to the plank, the comfort seat is heavenly.  When I got my RT it had a comfort seat and it was amazing.  I could easily ride 7-8 hours on that seat, and did for several years.  I upgraded to a Russell Day Long seat, but to be totally honest, it was only marginally more comfortable than the BMW seat.

Comfort seats are on eBay all the time and good ones are in the $100-150 range which is a great investment if you want to munch a lot of miles.

are the seats interchangeable between the K75 and K100 models?

k75 and k100 seats are interchangeable except for the 84-85 K100.   I may be confused and mistaken here but didn't BMW hire Corbin to make their comfort seat?

Regarding interchangeability between the plank and the comfort seat, the major difference is the seat pans and the tool tray under the seat.  I have two comfort seats with different seat pans.  One works with the tool tray and the other doesn't.  To add to the confusion, there are different hinges for the different seat pans. 

With three bikes and about six or seven seats over the years, I am at a loss as to what seat works with what bike and what hardware goes with what.  Sorting out the mess of what works with what might make a good winter project among many others.

Fehrer was certainly one of the manufacturers of K model comfort seats.
