Casting and machining and custom parts.
« on: July 25, 2018, 06:57:46 PM »
Due to no longer having to work for a living and not wishing to die from boredom I joined the North Pine Trades Guild. It's manned by ex tradesmen and people who want to upgrade their skills. It's based in the North Pine Country Park which is a pioneer village. There are heaps of different trades operating out of the park.

I have joined the one that specialises in woodwork, metalwork and metal casting. They have heaps of differing skills and a really good workshop which has a turret mill, metal lathes, a broacher, key way cutter, grinders drop saws  a small CNC machine and all the accompanying hand tools. The foundry casts in aluminium and brass. The method is sand casting and you can either make your own template out of wood plastic or what ever or have a pattern made.  The woodworking shop will make pattern.

They are in the process of making a large CNC machine for the Blacksmith who operates out of another shop. Once that is done they are going to make another one for their own shop.  They will also undertake milling and machining work, there were a few Indian parts being cast in brass last Tuesday. I had a talk to one of the people who does computer design work for the foundry and asked about having foot peg plates cast for the Bricks. Due to the fact that their is a small amount of shrinkage they would do it with the mounting holes blanked off, these would be drilled later.

Anybody who is interested in having parts made or repaired, this is a worthwhile consideration. Considering we are talking custom parts their prices are extremely cheap. They are used to making no longer available machine, car and motorcycle parts. They are currently open Tuesday and Friday mornings until 12 noon and Sundays. I'm sure there will be like organisations in the US and the UK.

Jo I don't think they do chain mail, or even plate armour. I'll ask tomorrow and get back to you. With snow and rain being so consistent with your state aren't you worried about rusting up and seizing?  :nono They might not find you till spring.  :dunno
