https://panamacity.craigslist.org/mcy/d/1995-bmw-k110lt-motorcycle/6647667906.html

Went for a look see.

ran ok, but I rode over there on my K75 which seemed much smoother [duh]. those rubber mounted bars felt strange.
paint chipped in spots, but not bad
fr brake ok
rear ms leaking all over the kickstand ruined paint] and 0 pressure. rebuild or replace . abs blinking, may or may not be working
seller ought used a year ago, has no records, and has done nothing. says battery is new[former owner], looks like an odyssey.
could not see a level on oil glass. [overfilled?]
looks like a slight amount of oil is leaking [back of engine] didn't smell like tranny fluid.
corbin and orig seat.
fr tire has tread, but old and hard. newish mich on rear.
old and new ws.
says he'll take 1650?

Some of my family lives in South Fl and I'd like to take some trips down there from PANAMA cITY FL ,600mi., doable on my K75s, but thinking the wind protection at interstate speeds will be less tiring on an LT.

I think 1650 is a fair price. For myself, I think trying to low-ball is self-defeating. At some point, you just piss off the owner and they won't sell to you on principle. I had a guy once drive four hours to see a truck I was selling for a very good price. I told him it was non-negotiable, and if he didn't want to pay it, don't waste his or my time.  When he got here, he offered me $500 less than my asking. I told him to leave and drive back to where he came from, and I sold it the next day to a guy who wrote a check for the full, very fair amount I was asking. So the guy drove 8 hours and wasted who knows on fuel, just because...well, because he was an asshole.

fair enough.but I know how expensive some parts are and what a PITA it is to get at some things to repair them. I didn't spend a lot of time investigating as a storm was about to hit, but at the very least it needs:
a new front tire
rear brake MS or possibly repair kit
repaint kickstand
possible rear engine seal [the oil has to be coming from somewhere, didn't smell like tranny fluid]
since there are no maintenance records, I'd also have to do the usual stuff, spline lube , fluid changes, etc.
I would have rather paid full asking price for "good condition" These LT's seem to go cheaper and are a harder sell than the other models.

thanks for the "worst case scenario " I know from experience that  it's really hard to tell what these  machines really need until you tear into them. He must not have been driving it too much to not notice no rear brake. A well maintained brick seems to last forever, this doesn't appear to be one of those so unless I can get it really cheap, I think I'll pass. It's not like I really need another brick, but this is different enough from my 75s that I wouldn't really mind one.

According to johnny, people should be giving us money to take these heaps off their hands :dunno2:

I stand by it -- I think 1650 is a fair price. It's not a beater or a parts bike or a project bike. Shinkos cost under $100 apiece and they're a fine touring tire. Parts and rebuild kits for most everything are readily available and a reasonable price. There's an international community supporting these machines. If you want one for less you might be making a lot more compromises.

Update -- It's a fair price unless you don't want it which it doesn't sound like you do :-)

thanks for your insight.I think Johnny was employing some hyperbole. I don't necessarily want one for less, I just would rather be riding than wrenching. This one was close so I thought I'd go check it out.

The LT can be a motorized oven where you ride.  In hot weather, my K75S is the go to ride with the K100RS a distant second(but more fun).  A long trip wearing gear in Florida in the summer is my idea of torture.

As far as price, $1650 sounds pretty fair.  But then, I like to tear a "new" bike down and reset the maintenance schedule to zero.  As long as there is something else in the garage to ride I don't mind messing about fixing all that stuff that needs doing.  At $1650 I figure there is at least $400 in the budget for parts and cosmetics if I do my own work.  If you need to hire all the work, the seller needs to pay you to take it.  These old bikes are not meant to be owned by mechanical virgins.

thanks for the reply. I would probably do everything I was capable of myself, but I don't really want to.

Seller says :
I rebuilt the rear cylinder and it works perfectly. I replaced the front tire. I drained approx 1 oz of motor oil from the engine to get to the correct level. I found one of the front brake hoses had a bulge and I ordered all new stainless steel hoses for the front and back, they are being delivered tomorrow. I found the left front brake pad sticking (the side with the weak hose) so I disassembled, cleaned and lubed it. Hopefully by Friday all the work will be done and the bike will be back ready for the road.

Back to original price, which I thought was fair for a good running brick. I may go take another look.
