Parting out K1100lt bodywork
« on: May 28, 2018, 01:55:23 AM »
Hey everyone,

I just picked up a 1996 K1100Lt that i am going to convert to a cafe/bobber ish style bike. I love the lines and have no intention of touring.  I know this can cause mixed emotions on here but I've been wanting one for a few years now and finally found one cheap enough to justify tearing apart......

I have all the body work which seems to be in really good condition and both side luggage and center back luggage. I figured i would post on here and let people know before posting parts on eBay.  This is going to be a learning process for me and i don't know exactly whats all coming off at this point due to inexperience but i know the luggage, fairings, windshield, and I'm sure there will be plenty of other things coming off.  Im in Milwaukee Wisconsin area.

Im sure i have lots of things to learn and there seems to be a ton of great info on this forum so if/when i say something stupid a kick in the right direction will be appreciated.

If you have any interest in certain parts or want all the body work that would come off in a project like this message me and we can figure it out.

Not sure how soon I'm going to start the process...work and other things in life but I'm sure it will be fun....

Thanks and glad to join the group..

I don't imagine you want a temperature gauge on a bobber?  What do you want for the sensor at the water/ oil pump?  And with the gauge?

The  gage doesn’t work. I don’t know if it’s the sensor or the gage itself. Does the sensor trigger the hi temperatures light? I may want to keep it if it does.

I don't know if that triggers the over heating idiot light, or if it is the coolant sensor that is at the top of the engine that feeds the metronic info for fuel injection. At any rate, I guess your not interested in selling it. Thanks for your prompt response.......I will keep looking.

The fan and idiot light are triggered by the Motronic unit from the signal generated at the stand pipe behind the radiator on the top of the engine block.  The temperature gauge gets it's signal from the sending unit on the water pump.  To remove it you'll have to replace it with a drain plug.  The plug and gasket ring will set you back about 2 bucks.

Since I don’t even know if it works or not you just cover the shipping and I’ll give it to you with the gauge for free. If it serves me no purpose I may as well get it to somebody who could use it. Tell me more about this drain plug and gasket things so I can get the sensor off and out the door

I’ve also removed the Farrings this weekend and once I get everything sorted out and a little more time on my hands I’ll get some pictures posted up of each piece individually.

Hey all,

Sorry to disappoint but no chopper style happening here. To be honest I'm surprised it took this long to get some good ribbing about doing a cafe/bobber/tracker. No hard feelings on my end. Makes me feel like part of the family. I read a lot of the posts on here and had a good idea of what i was getting into. LOL,  I know you all love your good clean touring bikes. Im not much into touring but lets be honest... the motor and lines of this bike are amazing. Besides like someone said.... more parts for you guys. I could have done the typical 250 single cylinder cafe like everyone else but this is the beast i want to use. The motor being the focus. My next step is new suspension, tires, and brake pads (any recommendations would be helpful)....all that safety stuff....have a cheap headlight to use for now till i get further into the project and know what i want exactly.

Suspension: I contacted ram shocks for the rear and I've only been able to find progressive for the front. Might do progressive for both. don't have a huge budget so Ohlins are not an option.

Tires: Ive seen Pirelli Angle Gt's recommended somewhere?

So I have all that wiring cleaned up now, just waiting for my actual headlight.  I will be posting pictures of the individual pieces of bodywork for sale soon, running out of space in my garage, lol. :riding:

Hey all,

Ive been kinda slacking lately but here it is....Please look at the pictures carefully and i will do my best to answer any questions or get more detailed pictures on individual pieces. I would like to sell the whole lot as a 1 and done for $1000 because I'm busy/lazy and don't want to part it out. If that doesn't happen within a week or 2 I'll cave in and part it out individually (or if i just get swarmed with people wanting bits and pieces).
