Oetiker clamps, how tight?

So, I’m reassembling my intake and I’m wondering how tight to make the oetiker clamps. I’ve read that you squeeze them until the ears touch but I don’t want to break the plastic on my intake. I’m using oetiker pliers.

Why don't you believe what you read? Where did you read what you don't believe? When do you believe what you read? Why would you believe you have the correct size clamp? You don't think your ears are supposed to touch during this process, do you?

There's fake news everywhere. If you think this is difficult, try getting the right spark plug. :giggles

I read the instructions on the Goodyear rubber site. I try to trust what I read. I also try to trust my torque wrenches and the feel of a fastener. And then I second guess myself. lol

Even more than that, I trust the guys who have “been there, done that.” [emoji14][emoji6][emoji106]

It's too late to strive for perfection. That ship has sailed. Newbies blow it and so does everybody else, sometimes. Ignoring or not following instructions is the first principle of newbiedom. Making assumptions is another.

I was just wondering if you guys make the ears on the clamp touch every time or do you trust your hands. I’m a strong guy and even with these double linkage pliers feels like it would take two hands to squeeze the clamp that tight.

no, they don't have to touch.  pinch it just enough. firm.

Cable ties? How do you snug them up tight enough?

Get good quality 7mm ties and pull them up with a pair of pliers.

You can use stainless steel cable ties. They won't suffer any degradation from sitting in the sun. You can use a pair of pliers to cinch them up or a plastic cable tie gun. But you need to pack the tie in order to get it to grip. A good set of tin snips can trim off the excess.
