k75 aftermarket pipe on ebay
« on: February 04, 2018, 01:42:07 PM »
stumbled across this, great price, not sure brand, may be a MAC.  These things are scarce and the seller does not know what he has!  If nobody grabs it I may buy it and resell it for $200!

I was offered a Staintune a few weeks ago while looking at a stock muffler. I had visions of modifying the stock one, fortunately common sense kicked in. However from what I have been able to find out over the years is there is no performance advantage to be gained. Only noise. :dunno2:

Absolutely true.  But I love the looks and sound of the MAC I scored back in 2012.  And it's held up very well.  The stock muffler's whine annoyed the hell out of me and the MAC has a nice tone that almost disappears at highway speeds.  I also have the airbox delete K&N cone filter that also adds nothing to the bike's performance but looks cool.  Actually, freeing up that space under the tank may make it run cooler.

I have a Staintune muffler that needs a new finish, looks burned-up like the MAC on this post. The plating looks like brushed stainless over steel.   Has anyone had success in re-plating these?

Has anyone noticed lower fuel economy with aftermarket (through) pipes?

I had to look-up "pillion", now I'm the one laughing.

You can try cleaning with very fine wet and dry and follow up with stainless polish and stainless cleaner to maintain. A bit labour intensive, but you will have the satisfaction of a job well done. I cheated on my OEM muffler and used 6" buffing wheels on my bench grinder, for the hard to get places I used a air grinder with cotton mop attachments. You have to be careful with some aftermarket mufflers they are not built as substantial as OEM in wall thickness, and can ding easily. I do seem to remember somewhere BMW recommending OEM mufflers be cleaned with French chalk only.
