K1100rs "restoration" and repaint
« on: December 29, 2017, 09:18:26 PM »
Hi ya´ll... Just wanted to introduce myself, and what i´m trying to do

I have a K1100rs -93 80 000km on the clock, and to think of it, theres not a single problem with it... Just a few cases of neglect, ex. the extra buttons for ABS-off and The hazards have seized.. But i dont really care about those. previous owner had emptied the exhaust, so it sounds a little better... I dont really feel any difference in power because of that. Thats about everything i can think of

What i have in mind is a full check on the vitals, electrics, seals, valve clearances, and a full service. But my final goal is to make this brick a "tribute" to a 3.0 CLS IMSA race car from yester year.

and btw... I need a new black windscreen with the brackets intack, and new front indicator covers (Not a shock the latter one to any K owner... )

I will try to post my slow progress once in a while... And if you have any tips for me, just post them here or just DM me anyday

Cheers from finland

My current situation right now, is that the bike is in pieces. All fairings removed, and waiting for the painter to have time to work on it. And i cracked the windscreen mounts... All of them... For f*ck sakes. Gonna have to buy a new screen  :dunno2:

Before springtime and mounting the fairings back on, i'm gonna do a full service on it (excluding splinelube), and i plan on getting the injectors cleaned and serviced also

Why not? Seems like the perfect time to get that taken care of.

K1100rs has better, deeper and strenghtened splines. Finnish bmw guru explained to me, that when he dismanteled many finnish ex police bikes, NONE of them had any excess wear in them even though there were over 100 000km on the clock... So he told me just to do it when i need my clutchplate replaced

It doesn't matter what they are made out of, if they haven't been maintained properly. Just my opinion. But dig around Motobrick long enough and you'll find some colorful stories about K1100 splines failing at inconvenient times and places.

The fabled founder of Motobrick.com has had his share of K100RS drive shaft problems including spline and U-joint failure.   Best to keep a close eye on that drive shaft.  It's a pain in the ass on Paralever, but failure can be prevented with maintenance program similar to the earlier Monolevers.

Yeah i know... But the K100 and K1100 dont have the same shaft... The grooves are deeper and sturdyer in the newer model.

I havent witnessed this with my own eyes, but i believe the guru who has done these hundreds of times, and is the finnish go-to guy when talking about old R and K bikes

And yes, you guys are not wrong also... Better to be safe than sorry. But because of my tight budget, i'm going to put my trust on those splines until my clutch gives up...

But because of my tight budget ...
Grease is cheap. Labour, or time, is what it's worth to you.

+1 Grease is cheap you don't want to Finnish up on the side off the road with stripped splines.

Not really a problem... I'm truck driver by profession, and i have friends almost everywhere in finland, so i dont worry about breaking those. The labour is one thing... I have a place where to do it, but it's not even close to where i live, and if a want a pro to do it, it's around 600e here or more.

And if a guru says dont do it separately, i wont... And those police bikes have been through hell, believe me

One problem i do have, is a heavy throttle... Next thing i was planning on doing was to strip the grips and clean underneath. I used to have a "Cruise control", but found out that the Handlebar weight was too tight, and affected the throttle grip so it would stick. And there must be alot of gunk underneath the throttle

Ideas? Colors are off, i know... Do you like it? My own opinion is that i kinda like it, but those horizontal lines crossing the vent are too thick. Tank and rear fairing will get those M-lines also on top of them... Other idea i have instead of those lines, is a K1100RS custom sticker with an M-Sport coloured underlining

-Update-

There they went... My collegue who owns Karhuline Truck customs in finland, and is a fellow trucker 2, took my fairings and tank to his good care... Well see what he comes up with. I have a sort of clearish plan in my head for what i want considering paintwork.

Next things on my list... Oils, filters, front fork seals etc... I´m extremely low on cash right now, so i´ll have to wait for next month to do those... And i have to order that new windscreen... Goddamit!!!!

I like the new paint job, how has the bike been working? Any more recent photos you can share?
I saw your bike on YouTube, yes?
Cheers!
