K100 Big End Shells
« on: November 12, 2017, 11:02:53 PM »
Wondering if anyone here can confirm that the Big End Shells for the auld K-hunner are indeed extortionate at over £100 Squids for the set, and that I'm not being ripped off by the supplier?

I enquired as to whether or not their price included a chap to pop along with them and offer moral support, beer, and kind words of encouragement but alas no, it didn't.

I built a Group A Impreza engine this summer and they weren't that expensive!

Deserves a  :mbird .

Cheers.

An update / replying to myself (sign of impending madness);

After ringing around a few places, yes, they are extortionate. Ditto the Rod Bolts.

Was sorely tempted to sling the old ones back in, but that would never do.

Ho-hum.

Just wondering: Why? Those parts are expensive because there's no market for them -- these motors are just about indestructable, people rarely have reason to strip them down.

The OEM price is twice that in the USA. You could make a fortune exporting them, if anybody wanted them. :giggles

Billday - I'd stripped down a spare bottom end I had and instead of turning it into a coffee table I decided to recondition it. I'm far too punctilious for my own good so I thought I'd whap in some new shells while I was there. There is the slightest hint of wear.

Polished the pistons too, there was a fair bit of carbon on them. Rings are tip top, as are the bores and crank journals.

Laitch - I detect a flaw in that plan, can't quite put my finger on it, although they might make for some interesting ear rings in the ebullient US market.

Here's a snap of the aforementioned shells. Strange crazy-paving type destruction.

I can only assume it was due to infrequent oil changes by the person responsible for maintenance.

Whatever caused it, it put paid to the 'bullet-proof' rating.

New ones en-route.
