K100 resurrection "The Wasp"
« on: October 22, 2017, 04:46:45 PM »

Hi all, as I stated in my intro I have acquired an 1984 K100 in a bit of a sorry state. I collected it in July but due to being on a bike tour of Europe for a couple of weeks and having a few bike meets to attend I have only really started doing anything with it over the last couple of weeks. Here is a pic of what the old girl looks like at the time of arrival. I have decided that the most economical way of getting it back on the road is to turn her into a street scrambler with a black and yellow paint job, hence the name Wasp. Watch this space.

here are a couple of more pics before I got started

I know I have my work cut out but I do enjoy a challenge even if it is going to cost me :yow .

What in the world are people thinking?

Look forward to watching you turn this into a motorcycle.

Hi blundering, welcome aboard, the bike looks reasonably clean and someone spent time stripping the tank. Hope you have most of the missing bits. Good luck with your project. Do you know if she was a runner.

The tank has been half heartedly cleaned if you were able to see it you could see that there are 2 x dents and the edges and badge recess are still in a mess with multi coats of paint. I fear that he may have gouged it and won't know if there are any leaks until I get a chance to check it. I got a few bolts and bits and pieces with the bike and I am still getting others as time goes on. I suppose I can liken it to having bought the bike in installments but in reverse, LOL. I have been assured that before he got the bike it was a runner and I do know the owner before him who has confirmed this. Unfortunately I was not given the keys, tank cap, seat, and numerous other items indeed the list grows longer every time I start to do things on it. To be honest it was my own fault and was assured that all the bits I needed were available in a box which I was given with the bike, being that he was a friend I stupidly did not look in great detail. Lesson learned never buy from a friend.
I have got new replacement brake disks/pads and various other bits which has cost me a small fortune and I am determined to get the bike back on the road buy end April, beginning May next year  :bmwsmile .

Over the last couple of weeks I have stripped the wheels, 5 x coats which consisted of varnish, gold paint, varnish, silver paint and a very heavy self etching undercoat.

First coat above came off in lumps until it came to getting into the edges and hard to reach bits

Paint stripper doing its bit but it had to be done 5 times to remove each coat.

Wheels done and tyres fitted so that I can get the wheels on the bike and work out my seat hight, before the frame is removed ready to start welding.

Have you tried teaching the seller to never screw a friend?   I would be after them non-stop for the missing parts or some compensation from the selling price.

I can understand where you are coming from, but as you could not know my friend or his circumstances the suggestion of teaching him anything is not and never would be in my thoughts and would never ever happen. He has an illness that does mess with his thinking and actions. Take it from me he does not intentionally go out to screw anyone.

Thanks Skunky, although I have to admit they are not staying silver, once I stripped them they started to show a fair bit of damage and will need to be filled and sanded before I paint them. The tyres are Heidenau K60's, they have a good look and surprisingly get a good review for on road use as well.

Spent a bit of time this weekend and fitted the new exhaust and shock so that I could go firm and weld the frame addition to fit the seat.

Looking good, well I think so, LOL.

I stripped the final drive and the shaft so that I could check clean and re greased the splines, I was pleasantly surprised with the condition of the splines considering the mileage the bike had done. I did notes that the rubber boot for the clutch was needing replaced and the gear indicator switch was deteriorating a bit. It seems that the plastic is breaking away, I will try to seal it with putty glue and check if it is still working if not it will need replacing as well. Next I need to knock up some sort of bracket for fitting the front mudguard.

Swing arm angle looks off. How long is that shock compared to stock?

The shock is 30mm longer than stock, supplied by BSK speedworks. That being said the rear wheel is lifted of the bench by the centre lift unit.

Sorry I have not been posting about my build it is just that due to other commitments and projects it has taken me a lot longer than I thought. I have been working on the bike but it has been spread over the last 2 . 5 years. I will update on how I have been doing soon.

Decided to experiment with new switches so that I could get other controls and use the M- Unit.

Now looking at the MAF and air filter options. The new Spal Fan can also be seen in place. This option gives a bit more room in behind where the original fan stem was.

Painted the tank, just a bit more rubbing down before polishing.

Yes that is next on the list. I also did a Moto Guzzi half way through this one, it all depends on what I can get at a reasonable price.
