Works Performance is permanently closed
« on: October 09, 2017, 08:02:20 PM »
Hi:
Would not mind getting a new rear shock for my K75s. I can feel that it begins to loose efficiency on the rebound after a few miles of riding. Now that Works Performance is closed, where do we go for good new shocks?

Thanks,

depends how much you want to spend.  On the lower end Progressive has a couple decent shocks, I got one off Amazon.  On the higher end Wilbers, Ikon and Ohlin, probably some others I can't think of right now.

I got a Progressive shock off eBay to replace the seized solid Koni that came with my K75 and it transformed the bike. I would recommend that.

I purchased a Ram shock from the UK. Even with shipping it was less than other options. They custom made it for my weight and riding style, choice of spring color and fully adjustable. Great quality and ride.

+ 1 on the RAM shock
put one on my K1100 and it transformed it
if anything it had too much adjustment as it is on a thread with a 9 x stop damper adjustment also.
took me a couple of months to dial it in to the sweet spot but I recommend RAM

With all due respect I wouldn't classify the 465 Progressive as "low end" as it will cost $450-$500.00 out the door. The 412 unlike the 465 is not rebuildable and will run you around $225- $275.00 or so. Probably the least expensive choice other than used, but a good shock nontheless. I have a 465 on an airhead and it is very high quality. There are of course the other choices mentioned here and all are good selections.

Not exactly true. The Ram is less money than the 465 Progessive as is the YSS and the Hyperpro is similar. The Ohlins and Wilburs are more expensive.

Re-state the obvious? Yes, I only referred to price; the 465 is more pricey than some other brands. Have you ever owned or looked at a Progressive 465? I own one and have owned other shocks such as the Works, I don't think there are any low quality shocks that are named above. Even the OEM shock was good quality. The 465 is very high quality indeed as are Progressive springs. ( The 412 Progressive is a quality inexpensive alternative shock but not rebuildable.) The attention to workmanship on the 465 is very noticable I would purchase again and I can afford what I like. You're entitled to your opinion...as am I. I did my research prior to purchasing the 465. I don't spend half a grand for "low quality".

I was thinking of the 412, probably should have said least expensive rather than low end.  The 465 is highly respected but more pricey.

I knew you were referring to the 412. The 465 is a whole 'nother animal regardless of the above opinion by Mr. Blue. I think I'll take a break from Motobrick and log out for awhile, perhaps permanently.

I'm running a OEM shock that has been rebuilt and upgraded by RAD a local Qld company. This is my second one in twenty years and while not what you class as high end I am happy with it and will continue to use them. I've ridden other bricks with different shocks and at my level of ability this shock perfectly adequate. And I think I paid under $300.00 AU.

I've got an Ohlins on my K 1100 LT. It has so many adjustments that not even MAX BMW could figure it out when I took it there for a tire change a couple of years ago...and they are an Ohlins dealer! The guy I bought the bike from advised me to "just set all the knobs in the middle"....Ahhh, OK.

That looks like the same Ohlins I'm running on my '95. Had it rebuilt a number of years ago, then had to have the pre-load adjuster hose replaced due to a split banjo fitting this year.
As far as I know it's just got three adjustments. Pre-load, Compression and Rebound compression.
I have a pdf file on it somewhere...

I got lucky and got it used from another briker that thought it would fit his ABS1 bike.... not... so I got it for a good price.

Scott, there is one more cylinder tucked up parallel to the seat connected to the main unit by a hose that also has an adjustment knob.

Sorry to hear that Works Performance closed, I used and enjoyed their product on my K1100RS.

I've had PS 412's on my earlier owned K75 in the 1990's.  As said, a well performing, less expensive option.  I got my current 412 with 5K miles on it for $100 as a stand-in till I get either a YSS, a PS 465, or a Ram shock

um I got my Progressive 412 rebuilt by Progressive. Johnny thinks that someone there via email accidentally told me they could, then mine arrived, and they made it work because they said they could do it. But at any rate its been fine for almost 40k miles
