Where do these parts go??????
« on: October 01, 2017, 07:51:29 PM »
So a friend gave me an 87 K100RS disassembled and basically in pieces in boxes. I successfully repaired and reassembled the bike, no small feat since I didn't take it apart! Problem is I have three parts left over, two strange black plastic covers, and this little spring doodad. So any of you K experts have an idea where these go? Thanks a million in advance. Pictures attached, John.

My guess, the upper pic looks like it could be a non-bmw retaining clip for the fuel tank.
The lower pic looks like left and right dash panels for holding gauges.

The clip is possibly a home made one for holding the air cleaner housing together.

Thanks, I tried the number on the back and came up empty. It was hard to read, maybe I will try again. John

Any idea how does the mirror retaining clip attaches? I can't see it in either a parts breakdown or in my Clymer. John

Fits in the grove on the balljoint stub.....to secure the mirror glass.

Thanks, I had a inkling that it was something to do with the mirror. Do I just clip it on the mirror before I pop it in to the ball joint? It is not really clear what its function is. And in case you missed it, I am really appreciate your help! John

No it goes on the other side of the ball joint, the idea being that the clip holds the mirror in place on the other side where the tip of the mirror ball socket pokes through.  This is for RS mirrors BTW, I know LT ones are different

Thanks for the help on the mystery parts. I now see the two strange plastic covers go under the fairing and actually attach at the main bolts holding the fairing! Burried.... yuck, at first glance it appears that I will have to remove the fairing to put them in. Oh well, a rainy day here in Louisiana. Thanks for all the comments and guidance, John.

Hey Poserbricker. I am sorry to be such a bother, but I have the mirror and clip in my hot little hand..... and I really don't have a clue what to do with that clip. The ball on the back of the mirror clearly snaps in to the socket on the light body, but what the heck do I do with that clip! Sorry if I appear clueless. Any other advice would be most appreciated. John.

OK what you do is unscrew and remove the orange indicator lens.  The you can see down inside where the mirror glass ball comes out the other side.  That is where the clip connects.  It is hard to see but I have attached a couple of photos.

Hope it helps

I have those hairpin clips on my 1992 RS.  When purchasing spare mirrors I have found that there are two different styles of mount for the glass.  Later models used that %^$@(*& clip that is a royal pain in the ass while early models had a pair of clip wires permanently installed in the socket.  Look in the hole the post goes into.  If you can see a pair of parallel wires, you probably don't need the clip.  Just push it in until it locks and you should be good to go.

Your 1987 mirrors may have that earlier version and don't require the hairpin clip.  If they are the early version not only will you not need the hairpin, but it can't even be installed in the groove in the post on the glass.  I found that out the very hard way.

Thanks for the input. Another poster sent me some pics showing how the clip attaches. Doesn't seem that secure, hopefully my mirror won't fall out! Again, thanks for the input.

The clips are not hugely strong and mirrors have been known to fall off - both the entire mirror housing and just the glass.  I have two tethers installed on mine, one for the housing and one for the glass.  They have proved their worth more than once already and since RS mirror glass and indicator lenses are becoming as rare as hens teeth I wold recommend doing something similar.

Thanks, I finally figured them out! They are quite hidden from view in front of the tank. I really don't know what function they actually serve, but I have put them in place. Thanks again for everyone's help.
