Me Vulcan.
Looks good, feels good, sounds good.
Single pin crank for that unbalanced sound.
Reliable, low maintenance.

After a few years of cruising I thought, I don't have to pay $500 a year to ride when I can go historic rego for under $100
I got a brick on the road, advertised the Vulcan for sale, and took it for one last ride. Then I spent the longest weekend hoping that nobody would answer the add, then I pulled the add out. That last ride was  mistake, I think.

My 13 Triumph Thunderbird 1600. My wife loves to ride with me (won't ride on the Brick) but she likes and respects them both. She is a great cheerleader for me riding. Much better than the ex, lol.

I think the XT500 was arguably the first adventure bike.  A friend bought one of the first ones, made some modifications and put 90,000+ miles on it in 3 years of wandering around North America.  He took that bike to 49 states, most of the Canadian provinces, riding as far north as Prudhoe Bay and as far south as Venezuela.  He was one of the first bikes to make it to Prudhoe from the lower 48.  Outside of regular maintenance he never touched the engine in over 125,000 miles.

A Yamaha factory rep swapped a new 750 Virago for his bike at Daytona in 1981.  They supposedly wanted to see what kind of wear it had in the 4 years he rode it.

A great bike.

I've been thinking that, if I were to get a new bike, it would be either an Indian Scout Bobber or the new Indian FTR 1200. Both would make nice short/commute rides, when compared to the tour-ability of the K.

I got to test-ride a Bobber while on a work trip to Florida. There happened to be a big biker event going on in Panama City Beach, so naturally HD and Inidan had their mobile "dealership-in-a-trailer" and test bikes present. The Bobber was fairly grunty on torque (no surprise in the cruiser world) but what did surprise me was the ~8300 RPM rev limit, and the solid power curve all the way up the revs. Sadly, the FTRs on display were prototypes, and there weren't any demo machines. Might be able to find one at a dealership when I get back home from Qatar.

Buying Brick parts causes premature greying; your sideburns also attest to that. MaxBMW is adding Just For Men to its Accessories sections in the parts fiche.

Damn!! So that explains my temples and the patches in my beard these past few years!  Could have used the warning, guys.

Also,  I accidently became a pirate recently trading my TW200 for a XL1200S.  Needs a new seat, better shocks, quieter mufflers and I don't think the balance/handling will ever be as good as a K, but I kinda see why they like 'em for these american roads.  You feel like you're going fast while doing the speed limit, or taking turns at the suggested speed.    Gotta go twice as fast around the bend for my K bikes to give an equivalent pucker.

Not sure if I am gonna keep it and do the mods, or sell it for cash to get my K75 back rolling.

That black 08 is actually my previous FJR.  I now have a 2014 ES model just the picture was too big to load on the website.  I love the cruise and the ES suspenders.  I was shopping for a 2016 but came across the 14 at such a deal I couldn't pass it up.  Came with a car load of accessories and half price of new with 2800 miles on the ODO.

I changed the battery on my brick and now it runs like crap.  If I can get it figured out it is probably going on the market.  Never had any problems with my earlier bricks and just don't have time to babysit a 23 year old bike anymore.  The Yamaha's have just been so reliable and trouble free.  I would rather ride than wrench.
The FJR is a great touring bike, I just did 1600 miles in AZ and Utah on a rental FJR. Second time i have rented one. Easy to ride, feels lighter then it is, quick. Only thing I did not like was the stock seat, it started to hurt after only a couple of hours. My K75S seems like more fun to ride, but I am not sure I could ride 1600 miles over 7 days like I did on the FJR.

Confession time.  In early August I bought one of those BMWs with the weird engine-  a 1998 R1100RS.

When the shifter grub screw backed out on my K75S, I knew it would be a while before I could tear it down.  In the meantime, I was rideless.
That made me moto-thirsty.

The idea made sense that if I’m going to fool around with 20+ year old motorcycles, I’d better have at least two of them in order to have one to ride.

I was also accepting that I might like something a little better suited to long rides than the K75S after all.   An RT/LT model BMW was the obvious choice, but an RS would be a step in the right direction and save some weight over a full blown RT/LT.

Why an R?  A boxer came about because I found one super cheap but wasn’t quick enough to grab it.  That got me started on wanting one for no other reason than I’d never had a boxer.

So that’s how it happened that I am now riding a non-brick.

It gets worse.
A friend introduced me to a local “Pullstart Racing League”: a monthly semi-underground minibike race held in the parking lot of a bar.   I knew what would happen if I went, and I was correct.
I am now fixing up my 1974 Rupp.
I guess that’s another non-brick I’ll be riding.

When I was considering a moto, if my neighbor had visited me with one of those instead of the K75 I might have one now. I like the looks of them and their quiet ride. One is used as an escort in bicycle races around here. It's swift and unobtrusive as it makes its rounds. The five-speed R1100RS apparently is not subject to the same degree of transmission input spline wear that some of the six-speed models can develop based on how they're ridden.

Good luck with it.

My thoughts, except the 30 yr old K has proved MUCH more dependable than the newer Russian R-bike imitation.  So far I've not been without and I can ride year round in the snow and slush.

How do you like the telelever front suspension?  No dive on the front?  Must feel different than conventional forks.  cheers.

When I got my Oilhead in August, the lack of dive at the first stop was whack as hell.  Whack.  I think I was used to it by the time I got home, however, and rarely think about it now.  I have to fix my K yet, so when I do, I wonder if I’ll forget and freak at the first stop when it dives.

It took a couple on runs to get used to it - but it doesn't bother me. This will be my long haul ride going forward
